"لماذا يتناسى الباحث العربي كولن ولسون؟ ولماذا يعزف عن تقديم دراسة شاملة للفكر الولسوني؟...". بهذا التساؤل يبدأ الدكتور سليم الشمّري كتابه: الوجودية الجديدة عند كولن ولسون، محاولاً استكمال سلسلة الفلسفة الوجودية الغربية، ملقياً الضوء على كولن ولسون وفلسفة المعنى والحياة عنده.
اعتبر الشمّري في كتابه، أنه قد فات الباحث العربي التمعّن بمؤلفات ولسون عن كثبْ في ظل الصرخات القوية لنيتشه وسارتر وهمنغواي وكافكا...، وذلك لسببين: أولهما: كوْن مؤلفات ولسون مزعجة لأنها تجمع مساهمات متعددة لأدباء كبار، وهذا ما أخمد صوت ولسون وجعل صوت الآخرين أعلى. وثانيهما: أن مؤلفات ولسون محيّرة، كونها شاملة ومتنوعة تجمع النقد الأدبي، والفلسفة والروايات وعلم النفس والتصوف... ما حيّر الباحث الذي وجد عند ولسون اهتمامات متعددة لا تتركّز حول فكرة واحدة. وبرأي الشمّري أنه لو واكب الباحث العربي مؤلفات ولسون، وتمعّن بأفكاره، لأدرك وجود فكرٍ وجوديٍّ جديدٍ يحمل على أجنحته فكرة واحدة تحوم حول تطوير الوعي الإنساني.
وبغية تحقيق الهدف من هذا الكتاب، قام الشمّري بتقديم ولسون كمفكر متميز، اهتم بمشكلة "قيمة الوجود الإنساني ومعناه"، وذلك بطريقة بسيطة وواضحة بعيدة عن الغموض والالتباس ومتميزة بالإيجاز والاختصار في عرض فلسفة ولسون بصورة موضوعية. وهكذا، توزع الكتاب ثلاثة فصول، يسبقها تمهيد ومقدمة تعطي لمحة عن حياة ولسون ومؤلفاته وانشغالاته الفلسفية، وفصول ثلاث سارت باتجاهين: الأول: يشمل اللامنتمي في الحضارة الغربية، والثاني: يعرض الأسس الجديدة في الفلسفة الوجودية عند كولن ولسون.
