بعد أن نجحت اليابان في أستكمال بناء قوتها والتخلص من قيود المعاهدات غير المتكافئة بدأت خطواتها نحو تأسيس امبراطورية استعمارية يابانية على حساب جيرانها- خاصة الصين- فكان صراعها مع الصين- وهو موضوع هذا الكتاب- صراعًا من أجل تحقيق هذا الهدف، ويتناول الكتاب الصراع الصيني- الياباني في الفترة من 1894- 1949 وهي فترة من الفترات الهامة في تاريخ كل من الصين واليابان حيث شهدت تلك الفترة اضمحلال الامبراطورية الصينية، وبزوغ اليابان كقوة استعمارية شأنها شأن الامبراطوريات الغربية الاستعمارية.
ويرجع سبب اختيار تلك الفترة إلى أن عام 1894 شهد البداية التي انطلقت منها اليابان للتوسع الخارجي على حساب جيرانها وهو العام الذي بدأت فيه أول حروبها مع الصين، أما عام 1949 فإنه يمثل بداية مرحلة جديدة بالنسبة لتاريخ كلا من اليابان والصين حيث استطاع الشيوعيين الاستيلاء على السلطة في الصين وتأسست جمهورية الصين الشعبية، في الوقت الذي كانت فيه اليابان قد فقدت كل ما حققته من توسع بعد هزيمتها في الحرب العالمية الثانية ورضوخها للاحتلال الأمريكي.
