علي مدي العقود الماضية، شهد العالم بأسره حملة مضادة للتدخين، كانت قوية وذات استمرارية في بعض مناطقه، خصوصا دول الشمال الغنية، وكانت خاقته وموسمية في مناطق أخري من العالم وبخاصة في الدول النامية، والملاحظ أن هذه الحملة قد حققت بعض أهدافها وأخفقت في تحقيق البعض الآخر. وتتمثل مؤشرات نجاح هذه الحملة في زيادة انتباه الأطباء ورجال الإعلام والتربية إلي أضرار التدخين بل ونجاح البعض منهم في ذلك، فعلي سبيل المثال امتنع خمسة عشر مليون امريكي عن التدخين فيما عامي 1982 – 1992، كما أنه بحلول 2007 سيحظر التدخين حظراً تاماً في النرويج وسنغافورة حيث ستعامل فيهما منتجات معاملة المخدرات.
