روائي وصحافي لبناني في جريدة "النهار".
ولد محمد أبي سمرا عام 1953 في قرية شبعا الجبلية النائية .
ثم انتقل ووالدته وأخواه عام 1962 إلى ضاحية بيروت .
تخرج في دار المعلمين عام 1977 ثم بدأ العمل في الصحافة الثقافية إلى جانب عمله بالتعليم ككثير من أقرانه المدرسين الصحافيين الملتزمين بالقومية والعروبة والأحزاب العقائدية .
نال شهادة دبلوم في علم الاجتماع الثقافي عام 1984 ، وكانت أطروحته حول الأخوين رحباني وفيروز وتأثيرهم على الحياة اللبنانية .
بعدها سافر إلى ليون عام 1985 هرباً من حمى الحرب .
وفي فرنسا كتب روايته الأولى بولين وأطيافها التي نشرت عام 1990 ببيروت ، تلتها الأعمال الآتية : الرجل السابق ، رواية ، دار الجديد 1995 سكان الصور ، رواية ، دار النهار 2003 كزابلانكا بيروت كردستان

يروي هذا الكتاب حروب طرابلس من اليسارية إلى السلفية، في العقود الأخيرة، ويقدّم لوحة بانورامية عن المجتمع الطرابلسي اليوم.
أهل طرابلس أنفسهم هم "الأبطال" والرواة، ومنهم فتيان وفتوات الأحياء، "منظمة الغضب"، "حركة التوحيد الإسلامي"، "جماعة الضنيّة"...
في الكتاب وصف لحياة الفئات الإجتماعية المتوسّطة والميسورة، الحائرة بين إسلامها وحداثتها المحافظة.
