عند قراءتي لسقوط قرطبة وبلنسية وإشبيلية، وكلها كانت ممالك منيعة حصينة وذات شأن، فإنني أتذكر سقوط فلسطين وسقوط بغداد في أيدي الفرنجة، ويحزنني أنه كان من الممكن أن نمنع سقوطهما بقليل من الجهد، بل حتى بدون أي جهد.. فقط بالامتناع عن دعم الأعداء ومؤازرتهم بالمال والعتاد و.. الرجال. هذا إذا حسبنا من يحارب أشقاءه رجلًا!
أما جريمة القتل التي تشكل محور هذه الرواية فهي حدث مكرر أيضًا يجد إمكانية حدوثه عند تهرؤ الدول والممالك واقترابها من السقوط.. ويصاحب هذا في العادة سطوع شمس الجريمة وعلو مقام المجرمين.
