غادرت الأميرة سالمة بنت سعيد عام 1867 زنجبار لتتزوج التاجر الألماني الذي أحبته، هاينريش رويته، وتعيش في ألمانيا. لكن زوجها توفي في حادث في شتاء 1870، فبدأت بالنسبة لها كأم لثلاثة أطفال حياة كفاح شاقة، لا نعرف عنها إلا القليل. فقد تنقلت بين عامي 1870 و1885 من مدينة إلى أخرى: دار مشتادت، دريسدن، رودولشتادت، برلين وكولونيا، وحاولت في بعض هذه المدن أن تكسب بعض المال بتدريس اللغة العربية، إلا أن ما أعاق عملها لم يكن قلة الراغبين في التعلم فحسب وإنما أيضاً فضولاً طلابها بشأن وضعها أرستقراطي، مما كان يجرح كبرياءها. وقد عاشت السنوات الأخيرة من حياتها في بيت والدي زوج ابنتها في مدينة يينا.
وبالمقابل نتعرف فيها من خلال مذكراتها على امرأة ذكية وطموح لم تكتف بدور المرأة والأم وحسب وإنما حاولت أن تقتحم عالم السياسة والدبلوماسية وشغلتها شؤون ومشكلات وطنها زنجبار رغم إقامتها في ألمانيا.
لم تكتب سالمة بنت سعيد هذه المذكرات التي نشرتها عام 1886 للنشر في الأصل، فقد دونتها وهي في وضع نفس وجسدي اعتقدت معه أنها لن تعيش حتى يبلغ أطفالها سناً تستطيع أن تروي لهم فيها شيئاً عن حياتها. لكن بعض أصدقائها أقنعها بنشر هذه المذكرات. فتهيأ لنا بذلك كتاب عن الحياة في بيت سلطان عربي من القرن التاسع عشر لا نكاد نعرف عنها شيئاً. ولما كان الكتاب موجهاً إلى القارئ الألماني الذي لا يكاد يعرف شيئاً عن بلد بعيد مثل زنجبار، حاولت كاتبة المذكرات تقريب بعض الصور فيوم الجمعة هو "يوم أحد المسلمين)، وشجرة البرتقال هي شجرة في حجم شجرة كرز كبيرة، وأمراض التخمة التي يصاب بها المرء أثناء الرحلات تشبه (أمراض أعياد الميلاد هنا).
