يتناول هذا الكتاب التاريخ السياسي للدولة العربية، أي تاريخ الدولة التي قامت بقيام الإسلام حتى سقوط دولة بني أمية في سنة 132هـ/ 750م؛ إذ أن الدولة التي جاءت بعد بني أمية، وهي الدولة العباسية، بدأت عصرًا اختلف طابعه كل الاختلاف عما سبق: فالدولة العربية طابعها عربي، أما الدولة العباسية فغلب عليها طابع الشعوب التي تحولت إلى الإسلام: الفرس أولًا ثم الترك. ونحن لا ندعي أننا عثرنا على مصادر جديدة مكنتنا من خلق تاريخ دولة العرب خلقًا جديدًا، لأن هذا الموضوع تناولته كتب عديدة من تأليف مؤرخي الشرق والغرب الحديثين، الذين استنفدوا معظم مراجعه؛ إلا أنه في الشرق- على الخصوص- ينقصنا عرض دقيق لتاريخ الدولة العربية على أساس منهجي حديث، فضلًا عن أننا وضعنا نصب أعيننا الاعتماد على مصادره الأولى من وثائق وآثار ونقوش ومسكوكات، وهي مصادر لم تستغل في البحث التاريخي الإسلامي إلا منذ عهد قريب.
