لا يوجد في المكتبة العربية كتاب واحد شامل لتاريخ السينما في العالم، رغم الأهمية القصوى لمثل هذا الكتاب. إن كتاب آرثر نايت "قصة السينما في العالم"، الذي ترجم عن الإنجليزية منذ أكثر من ثلاثين عاماً، وكذلك كتاب جورج سادول الذي ترجم عن الفرنسية منذ تلك الفترة أيضاً كانا غير كافيين أصلاً لأنهما من الكتب المبسطة، ولعل هذا الكتاب هو الأول في العربية الأكثر شمولاً والأكثر حداثة بالطبع.
والكتاب ليس سرداً لتاريخ السينما الروائية في العالم وإنما دراسة متعمقة له، يرصد العلاقات بين التطورات التقنية والجمالية والسياسية والاقتصادية في سياقها التاريخي. ويقوم بدور الموسوعة الشاملة التي يمكن للقارئ أن يرجع إليها في بحثه عن مادة تاريخية تتعلق بالسينما في بلد من البلدان العالم، أو بحركة فنية بعينها، أو بأهم مخرجي العالم، بالإضافة إلى التحليل النقدي ذي الرؤية العميقة للأفلام.
ويولي الكتاب اهتماماً كبيراً لجانب الصناعة والتجارة وتاريخ شركات الإنتاج الكبرى، والمؤسسات ذات العلاقة مثل النقابات والرقابة، كما يولي اهتماماً لدور كل من وسائل التوزيع والعرض في تأثيرها على المسار التاريخي لفن الفيلم، وقد وفق المترجم في الحفاظ على وضوح عبارات وأفكار المؤلف التي ترجع -ولا شك- إلى ممارسته الطويلة لتدريس السينما منذ عام 1973. وهو الآن أستاذ الدراسات السينمائية ومدير برامج الدراسات الفيلمية في جامعة إيموري Emory.
