سعت دار الفكر اللبناني من خلال سلسلة "أدباء وشعراء العرب" أن تنشر التراث العربي الذي طالما افتخرنا بانتمائنا إليه، نظرا لكونه ديوان العرب من جهة، ومرآة تعكس حياة العرب عبر العصور من جهة أخرى. وشعراء العرب في الجاهلية كثر، وأبرزهم ثلاثة تقدموا على سائر الشعراء وهم: امرؤ القيس بن حجر الكندي، وزهير بن أبي سلمى، والنابغة الذبياني. وهذا الكتاب يتضمن دراسة عن شاعر الحكمة والخواطر، والشاعر الملقب بـ: "شاعر من ومن ومن" و "شاعر الحوليات" زهير بن أبي سلمى فتناول الكاتب فيه اسمه، ونسبه، فنتاجه الشعري، وقد حفلت كتب التراجم بسيرة وافية عنه، وخاصة ما أفرده كتاب "الأغاني" لأبي الفرج الأصفهاني، و "الشعر والشعراء" لإبن قتيبة، و "طبقات فحول الشعراء" لإبن سلام. وقد ركزت هذه الكتب على خبر معلقته التي نظمها إثر حرب داحس والغبراء، وتعدد الروايات في شأنها، وهذه المعلقة هي التي منحت هذا الشاعر لقب "شاعر الحكمة والخواطر". كما توقف الكاتب عند المعلقة مليّاً، فبيّن سبب شهرتها، فحللها تحليلا أدبيا وافيا، ثم أبرز مضمونها، فمميزاتها، من حيث المضمون ومن حيث الأسلوب، فلم يوفر كتابا تناول المعلقة بالدراسة إلا ونهل من معارفه بغية أن يكون شرحها مستوفيا. وتسهيلا للقارئ، أنهى الدراسة بمختارات شعرية لزهير، استقى معظمها من الديوان، وقد رتبها تبعا لقوافيها، وهي تناولت معظم الأغراض الشعرية التقليدية التي برز فيها زهير، كالمديح والحكمة، والهجاء والوصف .... الخ. وأخيرا، أثبت فهرساً بالمصادر والمراجع التي تناولت زهير بن أبي سلمى .
