لاشك أن علم الاجتماع برمته كان ثمرة من ثمرات المجتمعات الصناعية الحديثة، ومن الطبيعي كذلك أن تكون الصناعة هي أبرز موضوعات هذا العلم الجديد وأكثرها استئثاراً باهتمام الباحثين فيه. وبرغم ذلك فإن تعريف المقصود "بالمجتمع الصناعي" ليس بالأمر البديهي، ولا حتى بالمهمة اليسيرة لمن يتصدى للبحث في علم الاجتماع الصناعي. ولقد ألفنا أن نسمع عن المجتمعات التي توصف بأنها "مجتمعات صناعية"، كمجتمعات غرب أوروبا، والمجتمع الأمريكي والروسي. ويلفت نظرنا هنا لأول وهلة حقيقية اقتصادية فنية مؤداها أن إنتاج السلع- الذي يتم داخل المصانع، ومن خلال استخدام الوسائل الفنية بأنواعها المختلفة- يؤثر أبلغ التأثير في الحياة الاجتماعية لأبناء تلك المجتمعات الصناعية. بل إنا لنجد هذا التأثير ينفذ إلى أخص مجالات هذه الحياة الاجتماعية وألصقها بالإنسان. فنجد حوالي نصف عدد البالغين في هذه المجتمعات يكسب عيشه من الصناعة، كعامل، أو مستخدم، أو صاحب عمل. ثم نجد جميع أبناء هذه المجتمعات- تقريباً- يعتمدون على الصناعة بشكل غير مباشر، سوءا كان ذلك من خلال منشآتها وخدماتها الإنتاجية، أو تطورها الفني أو ظروفها الاقتصادية. وقد عاشت المجتمعات الصناعية ولازالت تعيش حتى اليوم آثار الإنتاج الصناعي أو ظواهره المصاحبة. نذكر منها على سبيل المثال لا الحصر: الطابع الآلي للحياة بأجمعها، ونمو المراكز العمرانية الكبرى، وتركز أعداد هائلة من البشر، وتفكك الكيان العائلي المتماسك الذي كانت تعرفه هذه المجتمعات في عصر ما قبل التصنيع، وظهور ألوان الصراع والتوتر الاجتماعي بين أصحاب العمل والعمال. وتناول الكتاب المواضيع التالية : 1. مفهوم العلم وموضوعه 2. تاريخ البحث في الاجتماع الصناعي 3. التاريخ الاجتماعي للصناعة 4. المصنع كمنسق اجتماعي 5. الصراع الصناعي 6. سوسيولوجيا العمل الاجتماعي 7. صور العمل الجديدة في عالم ما بعد الحداثة الاتجاهات النظرية والمنهجية الحديثة في دراسة 8. الصناعة والمجتمع 9. المفاهيم والمصطلحات الأساسية في علم الاجتماع الصناعي والتنظيم
