يحرص المؤلفان على سرد حكاية هذا الشرق الأوسط الحديث بإتباع منهج السيرة الذاتية الذي يعرض لأبرز الشخصيات التي أسهمت في تشكيل المنطقة وخاصة منذ زمن الإمبراطوريات الإمبريالية ـ بالذات في القرن التاسع عشر. ورغم أن العنوان الرئيسي للكتاب يتناول ما يسميه المؤلفان صناع الملوك (أو العروش) فإن العنوان الفرعي الذي يشير إلى «اختراع» الشرق الأوسط قد يكون أكثر دلالة على الموضوع حيث يعرض لجماعات من الساسة أو الإداريين أو الصحافيين أو المغامرين أو الجواسيس المحترفين الذين عملوا في خدمة المصالح الغربية فكان أن أعادوا صياغة المنطقة: حدودها ـ وعلاقاتها وتركيبتها الديموغرافية بل حاولوا التأثير على طموحات شعوبها نحو الاستقلال والنهضة وخاصة على أنقاض الإمبراطورية التركية التي حكمتهم لأكثر من 4 قرون. يبدأ الكتاب بسيرة اللورد كرومر عميد الاستعمار البريطاني في مصر ويختتم بنظرة شاملة على آفاق مستقبل المنطقة. اسمه «ألفريد ثاير ماهان».. كان ضابطا بحريا من أميركا ينسب إليه الفضل ـ وربما الذنب، أنه نظر في عام 1902 إلى خارطة المنطقة التي تشكل المعبر الجغرافي والتاريخي أيضا فيما بين قارات آسيا وأوروبا وأفريقيا.. وطالع بطبيعة الحال امتداد الصحارى وارتفاع الجبال في شبه الجزيرة العربية. تحفها مصر عند البحر الأحمر ثم إيران عند أقصى الشرق ـ وتركيا في الشمال. بعدها قال ألفريد ثاير ماهان عبارة أصبحت مأثورة في التاريخ هي: هذه هي منطقة الشرق الأوسط. وسجل ذلك كتابةً في مقال نشره الملاح الأميركي عام 1902.
