ولدت أندريه شديد في القاهرة بمصر في 20 مارس 1920 لسليم صعب و أليس خوري-حداد غوديل (Godel).
عائلة أبيها من بعبدا في لبنان وعائلة أمها من دمشق في سوريا.
عندما كانت في العاشرة من عمرها تم إرسالها إلى مدرسة داخلية حيث تعلمت الأنجليزية والفرنسية ، وفى الرابعة عشر من عمرها سافرت إلى أوروبا ولكنها عادت ثانية إلى القاهرة لتدرس بالجامعة الأمريكية بالقاهرة، ولا تعرف أندريه شديد الحدود بين البلدان حيث تقول في أحد مصنفاتها الشعرية (إننى أنتمى إلى بلد بلا علم وبلا حبال تربطك).
أقامت أندريه شديد في باريس منذ عام 1946 حين كانت في السادسة والعشرين من عمرها ـ وتزوجت من عالم أحياء وأنجبت ميشيل ولويس شديد وهو مغنى فرنسى مشهور، ولها حفيد هو مطرب الروك الفرنسي ماتيو شديد.
بدأت أندريه شديد مشوارها الأدبى عام 1943 بمجموعة من الأشعار المكتوبة باللغة الأنجليزية ولكنها سرعان ما تبنت اللغة الفرنسية ، ويسود الشرق ومصر القديمة وريف مصر الحديث أعمالها القصصية التي نها : الرماد المعتق 1952 جوناثان 1955 اليوم السادس، 1960 نوم الخلاص ومن أعمالها الشعرية : نصوص لوجه 1949 نصوص للقصيدة 1950 نصوص للحى 1952 نصوص للأرض الحبيبة 1955 أرض وشعر 1960 أخوة الكلام 1976 وقد حازت على العديد من الجوائز منها : جائزة لويز لابيه عام 1966 جائزة النسر الذهبى للشعر 1972 الجائزة الكبرى للأدب الفرنسى من الأكاديمية الملكية ببلجيكا عام 1975 جائزة أفريقيا المتوسطة عام 1975 توفيت في 6 فبراير عام 2011
