انصبت جهود من ترجموا الهايكو إلى العربية على الهايكو الياباني الكلاسيكي منقولا في الغالب عن الإنجليزية أو الفرنسية اللتين- ومثلهما الكثير من اللغات في العالم -رسختا تقاليد لكتابة الهايكو منذ أواسط القرن الماضي وما قبل ذلك . ما عاد الهايكو يابانيا فقط بل هو الآن هايكو عالمي بامتياز يكتبه الآلاف من الشعراء في كل بقاع المعمورة، من هنا جاءت فكرة نقل هذه المختارات إلى العربية وقد ضمت العديد من شعراء الهايكو المعاصرين من الذين ظهروا في أواسط القرن الماضي وحتى الجيل الجديد . تضم بعضا من أفضل الأسماء إلى جانب أسماء شابة تكتب الهايكو دون الأخذ في الحسبان أية قناعات تخص البيئة أو الدين أو حتى ما يخص الهايكو من اعتبارات شعرية صرفة وذلك بحكم طبيعة الهايكو التي توهم بالسهولة على الرغم من كونها سهولة ممتنعة إذا سمعها غير المجرب ظن أنه قادر على الإتيان بأحسن منها.
