السيرة النبوية وسيرة الصحابة وتاريخهم من أقوى مصادر القوة الإيمانية والعاطفة الدينية التي لا تزال هذه الأمة ، والدعوات الدينية تقتبس منها شعلة الإيمان وتشعل بها مجاهر القلوب التي يسرع انطفاؤها وخمودها في مهب الرياح والعواطف المادية والتي إذا انطفأت فقدت هذه الأمة قوتها وميزتها وتأثيرها وأصبحت جثة هامدة تحملها الحياة على أكتافها. وقد جمع هذا الكتاب من أخبار الصحابة رضوان الله عليهم وسيرهم وقصصهم وحكاياتهم ما يندر وجوده في كتاب واحد لأنه اقتبس من كتب كثيرة، ككتب الحديث والمساند وكتب التاريخ وكتب الطبقات. لذلك جاء هذا الكتاب بعيون ذلك العصر ويمثل حياة الصحابة رضي الله عنهم، وخصائصهم وأخلاقهم وهذا الاستقصاء والإكثار من الروايات والقصص على الكتاب تأثيراً لا يكون للكتب التي بنيت على الإجمال والاختصار ومغزى القصة. ويعيش القارئ لأجله في محيط الإيمان والدعوة والبطولة والفضيلة والإخلاص والزهد وإذا صح أن الكتاب صورة نفسية للمؤلف وقطعة من قلبه وإنه يؤثر بقدر ما يكتبه المؤلف عن عقيدة واقتناع وتأثير انطباع، وبقدر ما يعيش في مادته ومعناه. وبالنظر لأهمية هذا المؤلف ولمكانة مؤلفه فقد اعتنى "نصر عبد السلام نصر" بتحقيقه بالتعليق على ما جاء فيه من نصوص وأحاديث كما واعتنى بحذف الأحاديث المكررة التي وردت في باب واحد، وقام بحذف النصوص التي وضعها العلماء، وأضاف أبواب صحيحة ثابتة من كتب السنة إلا متن الكتاب، إلى جانب هذا اعتنى بعمل تراجم لبعض الإعلام، وعرف بعض الصحابة، وذيل الكتاب بفهارس للموضوعات التي وردت في الكتاب وفهارس ألف بائية للأحاديث النبوية الواردة في الكتاب حسب الترتيب الأبجدي.
