يمثل البترول والغاز، حالياً، نحو 60% من موارد الطاقة في العالم، وسترتفع هذه النسبة إلى 65% بنهاية عام 2010م، كما يتزايد الطلب العالمي للبترول حالياً بمعدل 1.85 سنوياً، ما يتطلب المزيد من جهود الاستكشاف والتنقيب.
ومن الضروري مواكبة التطور المعاصر في تقنيات المسح الجيوفيزيائي، وتكنولوجيا الحفر، والإنتاج، وضبط معدلاته، وتنمية الحقول البترولية، والتخطيط المتكامل لنقل البترول وتصديره وتسويقه وتصنيعه، لا سيما مع التنوع العظيم في المنتجات البترولية، والاستخدام الواسع لها في شتي المجالات.
ولم يعد منطقياً ألا تستخدم الصناعات البتروكيماوية والكيميائية في الدول العربية سوى 10% فقط من إنتاجها من البترول الخام، وألا تمتلك عدة دول عربية أية مشروعات لتسييل الغاز الطبيعي أو الغازات البترولية، وتكتفي بحرقها، في الوقت الذي تستغل فيه دول أوروبا واليابان هذه الغازات صناعياً بنسبة تقترب من 99%.
وهذا الكتاب يتعرض لتاريخ البترول خلال فترات زمنية مختلفة، كما يتعرض إلى صناعته وإنتاجه وتكريره بنوع من التفصيل. ولعل الكتاب بهذه الصورة يكون إضافة للمكتبة العربية التكنولوجية، ومرشداً وموجهاً لكل دارس.
