منذ وجد الإنسان، وعرف اللغة والكلام، نشأت عنده حاجة لأن يقول للآخرين ما يعمل، وما يفكر فيه، ويعرف منهم، كذلك، ما يعملونه، وما يفكرون فيه، لأن طبيعة الإنسان الاجتماعية، تجعله يهتم بما يدور حواه، ولا يستطيع الحياة وحده، فكان لا بد من إيجاد وسيلة للتعبير عن آرائه، وآماله وآلامه وحاجاته، إلى غير ذلك. ونستطيع القول إنه منذ بدأ أول حوار بشري بين شخصين أو طرفين وهما آدم وحواء تكونت أول عملية إعلامية واتصالية بين طرفين تم خلالها أما نقل أفكار من طرف إلأى طرف آخر أو تبادل معلومات، وبذلك يمكننا أن نقول بما لا يدع مجالاً للشك أو الريبة إن الإعلام هو أول علم تم استخدامه بين بني البشر وهو بذلك يصبح أباً للعلوم. والصحافة، بمعنى نقل الأخبار، قديمة قدم الدنيا وليست النقوش الحجرية في مصر والصين وعند العرب الجاهليين، وغيرهم من الأمم العريقة، إلا ضرباً من ضروب الصحافة في العصور القديم، ولعل أوراق البردي المصرية، من أربعة آلاف عام، كانت نوعاً من النشر أو الإعلام أو الصحافة القديمة. وتطور الإعلام عبر الزمان والعصور من كونه وسيلة اتصالية تعتمد على تبادل المعلومات ونقل الأخبار إلى معترك مهم وؤثر قوي على حياة الشعوب والأمم.
