في رواية "الحمامة بعباءتها السوداء" يختلط الحلم بالواقع أو عالم الآخرة بالحياة الدنيا ذلك أن "ليلى عقيل" بدأت بالحديث عن امرأة ميتة وأنها (لن تستطيع فتح عينيها مرة أخرى لرؤية هذا العالم) وكأنها تريد بهذا أن تكشف (الأسرار الدفينة التي تركوها الموتى دونما اخبار أحد) وبين الموت والحلم في القبر بعد الموت يأتي تصريح المرأة/ الكاتبة (هل كنت سأموت وأنا احلم؟ ما نوعية هذه الأحلام؟ أم أن موتي سينبعث من بين رماد الأحرف بينما أكتب؟) وكأن الكاتبة هنا حاولت الاستتار بالموت ثم العودة متخفية كطيف أو شبح غير مرئي وقد غادرت قبرها لفضح المسكوت عنه وهو الشيء الذي لم تستطع فعله في الحياة لذا اختارت أن تعود من الموت روحاً محروسة بحصانه الغيب حيث لا تطالها يد البشر المتمثلة بالأعراف والتقاليد كقولها (عجنَا الدين بقوانين شيخ القبيلة). وفي مكان أخر من الرواية تتساءل (من أين نشأت تلك الثقافة الجاهلية؟ وكيف ترعرت ونمت حتى استغلقت العقول بها؟ ولماذا تضيق رؤية العقول وتتسع جاهلية الانغلاق برغم الكترونية العصر؟).
في هذا الفضاء الروائي تدور رحى الرواية لتقول حكاية المرأة في كل زمان ومكان، وهي تبحر في قلبها وعقلها، عاطفتها ورغباتها، تتسلل بعيداً عن عين الرقيب/ المجتمع والدين والأعراف...
