يعرض هذا الكتاب لبعض روائع وإنجازات الطب والأطباء المسلمين في عصر ازدهار حضارة الإسلام، ومن أ هم هذه الإنجازات ما يلي:
أولاً: الإسلام أتى بنظرية علمية وواقعية عن مفهوم المرض ويعترف بالطب والأطباء والدواء. فقبل الإسلام كانت الفكرة السائدة في العالم أن المرض شيطان ويدخل جسم الإنسان عقاباً له على معصية ارتكبها في حق الآلهة، وأن السبيل الوحيد للشفاء هو صلاة الغفران لكي تطرد الشيطان فإذا لم يشف المرض فمعنى ذلك أن إيمانه ما يزال ضعيفاً.
ثانياً: ومن أفضال الإسلام على الطب أنه نقى هذه المهنة من الخرافات التي كانت عالقة بها والتي كانت تصاحب العلاج: مثل وضع التمائم من رؤوس الحيوانات ومثل الوشم وقراءة الطالع والنجوم وزجر الطيور والاستقسام بالأزلام وضرب القدام. وفي هذه يقول رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: "من علق تميمة فلا أتم الله له".
ثالثاً: والإسلام أمر بالنظافة الشخصية كوسيلة للوقاية الصحية واعتبرها مكملة للإيمان "النظافة شطر الإيمان".
رابعأً: وقد جاء الإسلام بقاعدة علمية في مكافحة الأوبئة كالكوليرا والطاعون والجدري. إذ يقول عليه السلام: "إذا سمعتم به بأرض فلا تقدموا عليها وإذا وقع بأرض وأنتم بها فلا تخرجوا منها فراراً منه". فهذه القاعدة هي نفس ما تطبقه الدول للوقاية من الأوبئة في عصرنا الحديث إذ يمنع الدخول إلى المنطقة الموبوءة كما يمنع من فيها من الخروج منها.
خامساً: جاء الإسلام بأوامر محددة وقاطعة تساير أحدث النظريات العلمية في القضاء على بعض الأمراض المتزطنة. يقول رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: "لا يبولن أحدكم في الماء الدائم فإن عامة الوسواس منه".
فهذا غيض من فيض مما قدمه الإسلام في مجال الطب عبر العصور.
