"حينما يقول الفريق أول محمد فوزي، أحد أهم قوَّاد العسكرية المصرية الحديثة، إن إطلاق «صفة النكسة على معركة 1967 هو وصف مبالغ فيه، إذ إن معركة 1967 ما هي إلا معركة خاسرة وقتيًّا... أعقبها مباشرة، مواصلة القتال الذي استمر بين مصر وإسرائيل ثلاث سنوات متصلة»، فإن ذلك يجعل من هذا الكتاب مرجعًا مُهمًّا يحتاج إليه القارئ لتصحيح أفكار كثيرة مغلوطة انتشرت على مر عقود واستقرت في أذهان كثيرين. ولأن مواصلة القتال اشترطت فهمًا معمقًا لهذه الخسارة، يُقدم الفريق أول محمد فوزي، في الجزء الأول من هذا الكتاب، تحليلًا دقيقًا وموضوعيًّا للأحداث الداخلية والإقليمية منذ عام 1962، فيرصد الأسباب والظروف التي أدت إلى معركة يونيو 1967، والعوامل المؤثرة في نتائجها. ثم يتناول بالتفصيل المهام التي أنيطت به بعد تعيينه قائدًا للقوات المسلحة عام 1967، ثم وزيرًا للحربية عام 1968، والتي تمثلت في إعادة بناء وتنظيم القوات المسلحة استعدادًا لتحرير الأرض، في ظل المحاولات المستمرة للعدو لعرقلة هذا الجهد. فكان تدريب الجنود وقتال العدو فعليًّا يتمان في وقت واحد، ما شكَّل فرصة نادرة جمعت بين رفع الكفاءة القتالية للقوات المسلحة وبين معرفة أسلوب قتال العدو وقدراته الحقيقية. فحققت هذه التجربة المضنية نموذجًا رائعًا لانتصار الإرادة العربية المصرية. عن المؤلف: الفريق أول محمد فوزي (1915-2000) قائد حربي فَذ، وصاحب تجربة لن تتكرر في التاريخ العسكري المصري. تخرج على يديه الآلاف من ضباط الجيش المصري عندما كان مديرًا للكلية الحربية، كما عينه الرئيس عبد الناصر قائدًا عامًّا للجيش المصري ووزيرًا للحربية، وكلفه بإعادة تنظيم القوات المسلحة وتجهيزها وتدريبها بعد حرب يونيو 1967، فسبب ضغطًا هائلًا وخسائر مستمرة وجسيمة للعدو خلال حرب الاستنزاف (1969-1971)، وأعاد بناء الجيش الذي استطاع أن ينتصر في 1973."
