لا نستطيع أن نتناول النصوص من خلال وصفها بأنها وحدات أكبر من الجمل، أو بأنها جمل متوالية في سياق ذلك بأن الخاصية الأولى للنصوص من باب أولى هى كونها ترد في الاتصال. ولربما بان الخاصة أو خليط من البنيات السطحية. ويترتب ع لى ذلك أن توسيع نطاق دراسات الجملة بحيث تشمل النصوص لابد ان يفقد النصوص عددا من الأمور الحيوية وأن يسبب مشكلات عملية خطيرة.
لقد حاء المجلد الحاضر نتيجة لمحاولاتي أن أحدد حقل دراسات النص، وأضع له الخطوط العامة من حيث هو نشاط إنساني. فلقد كتبت لأوحد البحوث التى تتناول ذلك من مجالات متصلة باللغة كعلم النقس المعرفي والاجتماع اللغوي، والحاسب الآلي ( مع المجال الذي يعد فرعا عليه وهو الذكاء الاصطناعي) وربما دفعتنى مطالب هذا التجميع الواسع النطاق إلى بعض الاستعمالات غير المتوقعة للبحوث المتاحة فيجب أن أتحمل المسئولية الكاملة عن كل ما استخرجته هنا من مقترحات ونتائج.
