عندما نرى كم هو طبيعي ومفيد للإنسان أن يحدد بين لغته والواقع، نكتشف مدى الجهد العقلي الذي وجب بذله للفصل بينهما وجعل كل واحد منهما موضوع دراسة. نحن نعرف قصة هذا التيرولي الذي يمتدح لدى دعوته من إيطاليا وأمام مواطنيه مفاتن هذا البلد ثم يضيف رغم ذلك أن سكانه ربما كانوا من كبار المجانين لأنهم يطلقون بعناد تسمية "cavallo" (حصان) على ما يسميه كل إنسان يمتلك العقل "Pferd" (حصان في الألمانية). هذت التطابق بين الكلمة والشيء المشار إليه ربما كان شرطاً من الشروط في الاستعمال التلقائي والمتواصل للغة. ولكن علينا تخطي ذلك إذا رغبنا في الانتقال من استخدام اللغة إلى دراستها. لقد أوصلت أولى الجهود في هذا الاتجاه إلى تطابق اللغة والعقل: إن المنطق، في أساسه، هو فن الكلام. وهذا، بالطبع، يدفعنا إما إلى إيجاد طابع عقلاني ومنطقي لأسوأ تناقضات اللغة، وإما إلى استنباط القوانين حيث لا يتطابق الاستعمال مع المنطق. إن المقارنة بين اللغات التي تمارس في أغلب الأيام ضمن خلفيات تاريخية هي التي أظهرت تنوع النبى الألسنية. من هنا، ورغم أن العقل البشري يبقى واحداً، لا تستطيع أشكال الكلام أن تتطابق معه، إذاً ينبغي اعتبار اللغة انعكاساً للفكر، لفكر يتحدد، كما نتصور، بالبنى الاجتماعية ولا يأتمر بقوانين المنطق. وهكذا، كانت الألسنية أمراً نفسياً واجتماعياً ما دامت مهمتها تتحدد في دراسة أشكال التطور وليس في اكتساب ال ملامح المكونة للغة.
