يهدف هذا الكتاب إلى بيان نشأة الأسرة وتطورها شكلا ووظيفة موضحا مفهوم الأسرة من منظورات مختلفة ووظائفها ودورها في تنشئة أفرادها وتمتين علاقات أفراد الأسرة وأدوارهم الاجتماعية وبيان مراحل نمو الأسرة وأهمية الإنجاب واتباع أصول التربية الحديثة ويتناول في الوحدة الثانية مشكلات الأسرة وذلك دور الأسرة في التشكيل السلوك غير المتكيف لدى الأطفال ومعايير الأسرة الصحية وأهداف السلوك غير المتكيفة وصفات أفراد الأسرة الناضجين والعوامل التي تؤثر في العلاقات الأسرية ويعرض استراتيجيات بناء العلاقة الإيجابية بين الوالدين والأطفال وبين الأبناء أنفسهم وبناء خطوط مهمة لفهم العلاقات الأسرية وبين الأنظمة الأسرية وأشكال التفاعل فيها ويشير في الوحدة الثالثة في العلاج الأسري تعريفا ونشأة وتطورا مبينا أهداف الإرشاد الأسري والمبادئ والافتراضات التي يقوم عليها مركزا على نظريات الإرشاد الأسري وموقفها من الأسرة كمصدر لتعليم السلوك القضائي وفي الوحدة الرابعة يتناول عملية العلاج وواجبات المعالج الأسري والأساليب العلاجية وتقويم العلاج الأسرى مبينا طرق إدارة جلسات الإرشاد التطبيقية" السايكودراما" والإسهامات الريئسة في اللارشاد الأسري منوها إلى الاهتمام ببرامج الإرشاد الأسري والخدمات التي يقدمها والأهداف العامة للبرامج معددا أنواعها ومنها برامج الإرشاد الموجه نحو المسترشد وبرامج اختيار أثر التعلم وبرامج تعزيز العلاقات وبرنامج التدريب التدعيمي وبرامج التدريب على المهارات النفسية التربوية هذا بالإضافة إلى البرامج السلوكية وأشهرها تدريب الأب السلوكي والعلاج السلوكي الزواجي ويتناول في الوحدة الخامسة إرشاد الأسر ذوات الأطفال- 13 سنة.
