بخصوص عقد البيع الدولي للبضائع، نجد اتفاقية فيينا من أهم الأعمال على الإطلاق الهادفة إلى توحيد قواعد القانون الدولي بخصوص هذا النوع من العقود، المنجزة من قبل لجنة القانون التجاري الدولي التابعة لمنظمة الأمم المتحدة، والتي شرع فيها منذ سنة 1968 خلال دورتها الأولى التي أسفرت عام 1972 عن وضع اتفاقيتين. الأولى: تخص تكوين العقد، والثانية: تخص آثاره، غير أنه لم يكتب لهما النجاح بسبب العدد الضئيل من الدول التي صادقت عليهما، بحجة أن غالبية الدول خاصة النامية ــ وبالخصوص الدول الاشتراكية ــ منها لم تشارك في أعمالهما التحضيرية التي طغت عليها النزعة الأوروبية، وبعد العديد من الأعمال والمحاولات المتلاحقة، تم دمج الاتفاقيتين في مشروع اتفاقية واحدة، أقرته الجمعية العامة للأمم المتحدة، بموجب قرارها رقم: (33/93) المؤرخ في: 16/12/1978 الذي أحـــالته على مؤتمرها الديبلوماسي المنعقد في مدينة فيينا ونوقش في الفترة من 10 مارس حتى 11 أفريل 1980، ثم تم إقراره بصفة نهائية، وأصبح يعرف بـ "اتفاقية فيينا". والتي حملت اسماً رسمياً: "اتفاقية الأمم المتحدة بشأن عقود البيع الدولي للبضائع"، ودخلت حيز النفاذ بدءا من شهر جانفي 1988 بالنسبة للدول التي صادقت عليها(تطبيقاً لنص الفقرة الأولى من مادتها (99) التي قضت ببدء سريانها في اليوم الأول من الشهر التالي لانقضاء اثني عشر شهراً على تاريخ إيداع الوثيقة العاشرة من وثائق التصديق أو القبول أو الإقرار أو الانضمام، وقد اكتمل عدد التصديقات المطلوب لنفاذ الاتفاقية في: 11/12/1986، لتحظى بعد ذلك بقبول واسع لم يشهد له نظير من قبل مع اتفاقية أخرى، الأمر الذي جعلها من أكثر الاتفاقيات الدولية الموحدة لقواعد التجارة الدولية نجاحاً حتى الوقت الحاضروذلك لأنها نظمت موضوع عقد البيع الدولي للبضائع الذي يعد حسب البعضمن أروع ما ابتكرته الحضارة الإنسانية من أدوات التعامل بخصوص العلاقات القانونية فيما بين الأشخاص وتنظيمها المستمر، باعتباره يعد دستوراً لروابطهم من جهة، والنطاق الخصب لتبادل السلع والخدمات وتنظيم العلاقات التجارية والمالية على المستويين الداخلي والخارجي من الناحية الاقتصادية من جهة أخرى.
