إن كلمة "صدفة" هو تعبير يستخدمه كل إنسان، بغض النظر عن مستوى ثقافته وذلك لوصف أحداث يعتبر وقوعها عشوائياً. وهناك صدفاً يمكن أن تثير الغرابة بحيث تجعل المرء واثقاً من أنها لا يمكن أن تكون حوادث عشوائية من دون معنى وأنه لا بد وأن يكون هناك معنى من أنها لا يمكن أن تكون حوادث عشوائية من دون معنى وأنه لا بد وأن يكون هنالك معنى وراءها أي أنها لا يمكن أن تكون مجرد "صدف" عشوائية. إن هذا النوع من الظواهر الخارقة للعادة هي التي يهتم هذا الكتاب بدراستها والتي سيطلق عليها تعبير "متزامنات" للإشارة إليها. والكتاب في دراسته التفصيلية التي يقدمها لموضوع المتزامنات يقود إلى طرح تفسير جديد لهذه الظواهر الغامضة يبين دلالتها الكبيرة التي فات على الباحثين إدراكها لسبب من لا حيادية المناحي التي درست من خلالها. وتتكون المرحلة التي يسلكها هذا الكتاب في طريقه لطرح تفسيره الجديد والرائد للمتزامنات من ثمان مراحل هي عدد فصوله، وبسبب من طبيعة المتزامنات نفسها وما طرح عنها من قبل الباحثي، وبالذات يونغ العالم السويسري الذي كان أول من جذب انتباه العلماء إلى هذه الظواهر من الصدف الغريبة وذلك بتفسيره لها بواسطة نظرية أثارت، ولا زالت تثير جدلاً كبيراً بين الباحثين، بسبب ذلك، فإن فصول الكتاب تناولت مفردات غاية في التباين من علم النفس وباراسايكولوجيا وفيزياء وفلسفة ودين وغيرها. وقد وضع الكتاب ليكون كتاباً للقارئ العام وللمتخصص في نفس الوقت، وذلك لأن المتزامنات تحدث لجميع الناس ولأنها ذات دلالات تمس الجميع دون استثناء. لذا فقد بدأ الكتاب معالجته المعرفية للمتزامنات بوصف أولي لها ثم تقدم بشكل تدريجي لمعالجة مختلف جوانبها وبشكل يساعد القارئ الذي: 1-يطلع على الموضوع لأول مرة على التقدم بسهولة ويسر، 2-أما بالنسبة للباحث المتخصص الأكاديمي فله في الكتاب فائدة استثنائية أيضاً، حيث سيجد مرجعه شامل لعدد كبير من الكتب، 3-وبحوث الدوريات العلمية حول موضوع المتزامنات.
