البرتو مورافيا كاتب إيطالي ولد في روما سنة 1907 م وتوفى في 26 سبتمبر سنة 1990 في مدينة روما التي عاش فيها جل حياته. يعتبر من أشهر كتاب إيطاليا في القرن العشرين, وهو يكتب بالإيطالية ويتكلم اللغتين الإنجليزية والفرنسية ولد في عائلة ثريّة من الطّبقة الوسطى. أبوه اليهوديّ كارلو كان رساما ومهندسا وامّه الكاثوليكيّة كانت تدعى تيريزا ليجيانا. لم ينه ألبيرتو دراسته لانّه اصيب بالسلّ الذي أقعده في الفراش لخمس سنوات ممّا جعله يحب المطالعة. في سنة 1929 كتب مورافيا أوّل مؤلفاته Gli Indifferenti ثمّ بدأ حياته المهنيّة ككاتب في مجلّة 900 حيث كتب أوّل قصصه القصيرة.
تميزت أعمال مورافيا الأدبية بالبراعة والواقعية لنفاذه إلى أعماق النفس البشرية, فقد هاجم مورافيا الفساد الأخلاقي في إيطاليا. ترجمت معظم أعماله إلى عدة لغات عالمية, كما تم تحويل العديد من رواياته إلى أفلام سينمائية. يتسم أدب مورافيا بتبسطه في سرد مشاعر الجنس لدى أبطال رواياته والتداخلات في الأحداث التي تنشأ عبر تلبية تلك المشاعر والرغبات، حيث أنه يتسم بالتركيز على التحليل النفسي لنوع العلاقة بين الجنسين أو الزوجين وهذا واضح في روايته (الاحتقار).

دع نبتتي المسكينة بسلام... اعتقد أنك أتيت لتكلمني عن الحياة التي سنمضيها عندما نصبح زوجين... ها أنا ذا أسمعك، جفل ثم أخذ يتأتئ. آه نعم، لقد نسيت أن أخبركم بأن له، بالإضافة إلى غضونه، حبسه في لسانه، كان يتلعثم في كل مقطع وهو يجيبني آلياً كأنه يُسمعني درساً حفظه عن ظهر قلب: سوف نسكن في الريف؛ في فيللتي حيث تعيش أيضاً أمي وأخي: سوف نحيا حياة بسيطة، حياة نظيفة، أنا سأهتم بمزرعتي وأنت ستبقين في البيت... إنها حياة بسيطة ونظيفة كحياة أبي وجدي وكل أجدادي منذ أجيال... وهل أنت واثق من أنه سيكون لك أطفال... كم؟ على الأقل ستة أو ثمانية أو عشرة. أريد أسرة كثيرة العدد. إذا لم يكن عددهم كبيراً، فما فائدتهم؟ إني أطرح السؤال عينه على نفسي... ولكن هل فكرت في أنني أنا من سينجب لك هؤلاء الأطفال؟..." هكذا وفي جميع قصصها، بدت القاصة ثائرة على حياتها، ومجتمعها متحررة من قيود الحياة الروتينية معتزة بنفسها هي امرأة غير عادية هكذا أخبرتها صوت البحر الذي لطالما همس لها بصوته الغامض والمقنع أنت امرأة غير عادية!!
