يروي الشاعر الإغريقي هزيودوس في كتابه "التيوغونيا" أو "أنساب الآلهة" قصة ولادة الآلهة ونشأة العالم في الوقت عينه. ويتضمن كتابه الآخر "الأشغال والأيام" تطورات مثيولوجية كثيرة. ويعزو القدماء إلى الشاعر الإغريقي الملحمي هوميروس ثلاثة وثلاثين نشيدًا تمجّد الآلهة من دون أن تغفل في معظم الأحيان الإشارة إلى ، أو رواية، أحد الفصول المؤثرة من أسطورتهم. وليس من المُحال القول بأن هذا اللون من الشعر ينتمي إلى الشعر الديني. لكن تبقى معرفة ما هي حدود هذا التأكيد، وبأية شروط يمكن القول إن هزيودوس والشعراء المنشدين الذين نظموا قصائدهم في ظل هوميروس هم الذين تركوا لنا شعرًا دينيًا.
