يعتبر العود من أقدم الآلات الموسيقية، وقد عرفته الأمم القديمة منذ آلاف السنين، فعرف عند المصريين، والآشوريين، والصينيين، والفارسيين، ودخل الحجاز في العصر الجاهلي على يدي سلمان الفارسي، وشاع صيته، فاستعمله المغنين استعمال القضيب الذي كان شائعًا في ذلك الوقت، فاستعمله معبد، وسريج، وبن مسجع، وبن جامع، وحبابه، وسلامة، وغيرهم من المعنيين والمغنيات، وفي القرن الثاني للهجرة المحمدية، ظهر أبو الحسن علي بن نافع، الملقب (بزرياب) منشأه في بغداد، وتتلمذ على إسحاق الموصلي، أشهر عازف على العود.
وقد أدخل زرياب في الموسيقى العربية تحسينات عديدة أهمها: إدخال مقامات موسيقية لم تكن معروفة قبله، وجعل الضرب على أوتار من ريش النسر بدلًا من الخشب، وجعل أوتار العود من الأمعاء. وضع قاعدة للغناء وكانت طريقته في الغناء سببًا قويًا في اختراع الموشحات ومنذ دخول زرياب إلى الأندلس، انتقل العود من العرب إلى الممالك الأوروبية، وصار له السيطرة على سائر الآلات الموسيقية، وأصبح لا يخلو من منزل، أو معبد أو محفل، وبين يدي كل محترف وهاوي...
