ماذا لو كان محمد علي قد بسط سلطانه على شمال أفريقيا قبل أن يمتد به شرقًا إلى بلاد الشام، مع ما في ذلك من دعم للنفوذ الفرنسي وتهديد لنفوذ بريطانيا العظمى في ثلاثينيات القرن التاسع عشر، ما يحمله من اتساع للإمبراطورية المصرية البازغة؟.. هذا الكتاب قراءة وعرض لوثائق تحمل كل تفاصيل هذا الحلم الفرنسي - المصري المشترك، فهو استعراض ودراسة للرسائل المتبادلة بين الخارجية الفرنسية ورجالها في مصر حول هذا المشروع، فقد أوكلت لقنصل فرنسا في مصر وأحد المساعدين مهمة إقناع الباشا بالقيام بحملة لاحتلال الجزائر بعد الاستيلاء على طرابلس وتونس، بدعم فرنسي، كل تفاصيل تلك المفاوضات والمناورات التي دارت بين الباشا وفرنسا، والتي تنطق بدهاء محمد علي ومحاولاته المستميتة في الحصول على أكبر المكاسب الممكنة مع تقديم أقل التنازلات، نطالعها على صفحات هذا الكتاب.
وإلى جانب التفاصيل التاريخية تنطلق الوثائق بالكثير عن شخصية محمد علي وكيفية تعامله مع قناصل الدول الأجنبية، ورجال حاشية المقربين، وعن طموحاته وأحلامه، كما تنطق أيضًا برؤية الغرب له ولقوته ولشخصيته، خاصة رؤية فرنسا ورجالها له، وتقدرهم لذكائه ونفوذه إلى درجة حمتلتهم على السعي إلى الدخول في حلف عسكري وسياسي معهن لم يقدر له أن يتم ويؤتى ثماره لأسباب كثيرة.
صدر هذا الكتاب بالفرنسية سنة 1930 بمناسبة احتفال فرنسا بمرور مائة عام على احتلالها للجزائر، كما كان أيضًا في إطار جهود بعض المؤرخين الذين أوكل إليهم الملك فؤاد كتابة تاريخ الأسرة العلوية، الوثائق المنشورة في هذا الكتاب لم تنشر من قبل، رغم أن مؤلف الكتاب عمد في بعض الوثائق إلى نشر الأجزاء الخاصة بالموضوع فقط، ولم يورد ما يتعلق بموضوعات أخرى في الوثيقة نفسها، أي نشر الوثائق كان نشرًا تاريخيًا وليس دبلوماتيًا.
