يقول مصطفى الأغا في مقدمة المجموعة «قبل ربع قرن كتبت ما ستقرأونه، وكان عمري يومها ربع قرن، وما بين لحظة ولادة تلك الكلمات وهذه اللحظة تغير الكون كله، وتغيرت أنا معه. قبل ربع قرن كنت أتحسس خطوات مستقبلي الذي هو الآن، يومها كنت أحلم بأشياء تصورتها ستجلب لي السعادة، وبعد ربع قرن أجدها مجرد أحلام وإن تحقق بعضها إلا أنها ليست بالضرورة من أسباب سعادتي»، مضيفاً: «نعم سأترك الكلمات كما هي رغم نصائح بعضهم الكثيرة بأن أتدخل وأغير من أجل صورة أبهى وجزالة أقوى. وتذكرت أن الصدق هو أساس البوح فإن تدخلت به لن يكون بوحاً، بل تحريفاً». يستهل الأغا مجموعته بقصة «الرجل الذي أكل حلمه»، ويصدرها بكلمة للراحل نجيب محفوظ: «إن لم ينقرض الجهل من بلداننا فسيأتي السياح ليتفرجوا علينا بدلاً من الآثار»، وكذلك يفتتح أقاصيصه الأخرى بمقولات لروائيين وشعراء آخرين، من بينهم غسان كنفاني، ومحمد الماغوط، فهل كان في ذلك إشارة من مصطفى الأغا إلى «آبائه المبدعين»، من أرشدوه إلى جمال الحرف، وغواية السرد وحكاياته؟ بينما تكون الخاتمة القصة التي تحمل المجموعة عنوانها: «جياد بلا صهيل»، المقسمة إلى 10 مقاطع، والتي كما العادة تنتهي بـ«نوم أبدي»، وموت معهود ربما في المجموعة الحافلة بالحزن والهروب، وكأن الشخصيات لا تمتلك خيارات أخرى، خصوصاً أن بعض «جياد» الأغا حاولت الركض، وجربت أن تصهل، لكن بدا صهيلها ضائعاً في ظل واقع شديد القسوة، أو هكذا رأته «الجياد»، ومن صنعها على قلمه عندما كان في الخامسة والعشرين، وربما يكون في دفاتر صاحبها جديد يعثر عليه عما قريب، أو حتى بعيد.
