يُعتبر إدريس الشرايبي أحد عمالقة الأدب المغربي المكتوب بالفرنسية، برز لأول مرة من خلال روايته "الماضي البسيط" التي تُعد بحق رائعة من روائع الأدب الحديث، فله يعود فضل إدخال الأدب المغربي إلى مضمار الحداثة. كان لصدور هذه الرواية صدى مدوياً، فهي تدور حول شاب متمرد على أبيه "السيد"، وهو ثائر على التقاليد البالية التي كانت تثقل كاهل المجتمع المغربي. كما أنها تتعرض الإشكاليات كبرى كثقل الدين ووضعية المرأة في المجتمع وصراع الحضارات وقضايا الهوية الناجمة عن إزدواجية الثقافة. ولعل هذا هو ما جعل منها درة من درر الأب في القرن العشرين، وعملاً ما زال يحافظ على راهنيته حتى اليوم.
