يعد قلق المستقبل خللاً أو إضطراباً نفسي المنشأ ينجم عن خبرات ماضية غير سارة، مع تشويه وتحريف إدراكي معرفي للواقع وللذات من خلال استحضار للذكريات والخبرات الماضية غير السارة، مع تضخيم للسلبيات ودحض للإيجابيات الخاصة بالذات والواقع، تجعل صاحبها في حالة من التوتر وعدم الأمن، مما قد يدفعه لتدمير الذات والعجز والواضح وتعميم الفشل وتوقع الكوارث، وتؤدي به إلى حالة من التشاؤم من المستقبل وقلق التفكير في المستقبل، والخوف من المشكلات الإجتماعية والإقتصادية المستقبلية المتوقعة، والأفكار الوسواسية وقلق الموت واليأس، وفي هذا المقياس قامت المؤلفة بالإطلاع على الأدبيات والتراث السيكولوجي والإجتماعي لقلق المستقبل، لتحديد المفهوم الدقيق له، وراجعت ما توصلت إليه من دراسات عربية وأجنبية اهتمت بقلق المستقبل (رغم ندرتها في المجتمع العربي)، وتوصلت لمجموعة من البنود المتعلقة بالمفهوم الدقيق لقلق المستقبل، وكذلك أعدت المؤلفة استبيان مفتوح، تم فيه توجيه مجموعة من الأسئلة وقد تم مراجعة القائمة لغوياً، وصياغتها بأسلوب واضح ومفهوم ومبسط، وتحليل بنود المقياس الـ (28) بنداً إلى مجموعة من المحاور الرئيسة التي ترتكز على جوانب قلق المستقبل.
