جرت العادة علي أن يتم قياس عبقرية وعظمة وقوة ونفوذ وتأثير شخصيات التاريخ الكبرى وفي شتى المجالات بحجم مساهماتها في تغير هذا التاريخ لاسيما إذا كانت هذه الشخصية من الضخامة بحيث يعتبر ظهورها في حد ذاته نقطة فارقة لما قبلها وما بعدها وهكذا كان سقراط الذي دفع العالم لتقسيم تاريخ الفلسفة إلي مرحلتين مرحلة ماقبل سقراط ومرحلة مابعد سقراط. ورغم أن العالم قد عرف وعلي امتداد تاريخه عشرات الفلاسفة العظام الذين أثروا مسيرة الإنسانية إلا أن سقراط الذي صرف حياته تماما للبحث عن الحقيقة والخيرة يظل هو الأعظم علي الإطلاق لأنه كان أول من نزل من الفلاسفة من بروجهم العاجية إلي عامة الناس حيث رجل الشارع العادي بعد أن جرت العادة علي أن يأتي الناس إلي الفلاسفة ولا يأتي الفلاسفة إلي الناس فكان سقراط يعلم العامة في الشوارع والأسواق ويبصرهم بحقوقهم ويدفعهم بالتفكير في واقعهم وما يستطيعون القيام به لتغير هذا الواقع نحوالأفضل.
