يضمّ الكتاب دراسة تدور حول قبيلة قريش وتاريخها، وأسباب قوتها وتفوقها على غيرها من قبائل الجزيرة العربية قبل الإسلام وبعده وصراعها مع الإسلام رغم طلوع رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم من بين أظهرها، ثم دخولها فيه ووصولها إلى رياسة دولته، وما جرى عليها بعد ذلك من تصاريف الزمان وما كان لذلك من آثار في تاريخ أمة الإسلام، هذه كلها موضوعات دارت حولها هذه الدراسة؛ لأن قريشاً كانت العمود الفقري للتاريخ الإسلامي في معظم عصوره، ولا يتأتى فهم هذا التاريخ على وجهه إلا إذا درس الباحث شأن قريش، وهي كانت دائماً من أصغر قبائل العرب حجماً، وكيف ظهرت في التاريخ وكيف تمكنت من بناء نفسها وسيادة غيرها من قبائل الجزيرة، وبينها قبائل ضخمة كالشعوب، من أمثال تميم والأزد وقضاعة وعبد القيس وهوزان وغطفان، وصمودها في صراع القبائل في بحر الرمال والصخور قبل ظهور الإسلام. هذه كلها موضوعات مباحث شائعة وشاقة في نفس الوقت، ولكنها ضرورية لمن يريد أن يدرس السيرة النبوية وموقف قريش من دعوة الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم إلى الإسلام، وانقسام القبيلة إلى قريش الإيمان وقريش الكفر، وما كان من صراع بين القريشيين، وانتصار قريش الإيمان، وهي الأقل عدداً وثروة. واندراج قريش الكفر فيها. ثم كيف وصلت عدوة الإسلام التي دخلت الدين في السنة الحادية عشرة كما يقولون، واقتدرت رغم ذلك على الوصول إلى رياسة أمة الإسلام، واستطاعت تحويل الأمة المجاهدة إلى دولة ذات ملك وسياسة وغايات دنيوية وما كان لذلك كله من آثار بعيدة المدى في تاريخ أمة الإسلام. هذا مجمل ما حاول الباحث دراسته في هذا الكتاب.
