إن كافة الشعوب حول العالم، حتى في الجزر النائية، لا زالت تختزن في فلكلورها الشعبي شظايا وفئات من معتقد عريق تم تواارثه عبر الأجيال، يتحدث عن تأثيرات وخواص ما ورائية وقوى سحرية كامنة في الأحجار الكريمة، وهذا يدل على أن هذا المعتقد المنتشر عالمياً ينحدر من أصل واحد، ولا بد من أن يمثّل علماً متطوراً كان له مكانته الرفيعة بين حكماء الماضي البعيد... أما الآن، فلم يبقى منه سوى الخرافات والشعوذة والكثير من المغالطات والمعلومات الخاطئة التي لا يمكنها أن تمثّل مرجعاً مجدياً يستند عليه الباحثون.
