حاولت أن اقتفي أثر الوحدات الوظيفية التي ذكرها "بروب" في حكايتنا الشعبية الحية، التي مازال الشعب حتى اليوم يرغت في روايتها والاستماع إليها. وعند ذلك كشف لي التحليل المورفولوجي للحكاية الشعبية عن اختلافها الجوهري عن الحكايات الخرافية ولم يتمثل لي هذا الاختلاف في عدد الوحدات الوظيفية التي يستخدمها كل من النمطين فحسب، بل تمثل في محتواهما وطبيعة شخوصهما. فلما فرغت من ذلك عكفت على تقديم تفسير لالتزام كل نمط من النمطين بشكل بعينه. وقد تمثل هذا التفسير في توضيح علاقة كل نمط بنفسية الشعب الذي كان رومانسياً بالأمس ثم أصبح واقعياً بعد ذلك، ولقد استعرت اصطلاح الرومانسية، فيما يختص بالحكايات الخرافية، من الأدب الذاتي، رغم علمي بأن هذا الاصطلاح يعني اتجاهاً في التعبير الفني والأدبي.
وعلى كل فإن الشيء الواضح هو أن الحكايات الخرافية تعبير رومانسي عن آمال الشعب الذي كان يرتاح إلى هذا التعبير لأنه يصور له العالم الجميل الذي يصبو إليه. فلما بدأ الشعب يعيش واقع الحياة نتيجة تغير المفهومات الايديولوجية للمجتمع، الأمر الذي جعله يدخل مرحلة صراع مع واقعة من ناحية، ومع سائر الطوائف الاجتماعية من ناحية أخرى، تغيرت أشكال تعبيره كما تغيرت وظيفتها، وهذا ما حاولنا جهد طاقتنا أن نوضحه.
