تعتبر "الرسالة القشيرية" من أهم المصادر المعتبرة في التعرف إلى مذهب الصوفية المعتدلة وشرح ألفاظها ومصطلحاتها الشائعة فيما بينهم. فقد حوت هذه الرسالة بين دفتيها مجموعة كبيرة من التعابير التي تدور غالباً على ألسنة الصوفية، كما شرحت الأحوال والمقامات والتجليات التي يصعب أحياناً على القارئ العادي أن يفهمها، ولكن أسلوب القشيري وسلاسة لغته قرّبت هذه المفاهيم إلى العقول والقلوب معاً. وبالإضافة إلى هذا، فقد احتوت هذه الرسالة على تراجم لعدد من كبار المتصوفين كما نقلت الكثير من أقوالهم وبينت أحوالهم. وقد قسمت هذه الرسالة إلى قسمين: القسم الأول: في سير أعلام التصوف وبعض أقوالهم وأفعالهم، كنماذج للمريد يسير على هديها. أما القسم الثاني: فقد عبّر عنه بقوله: "ذكرت فيه بعض سير شيوخ هذه الطريقة في آدابهم وأخلاقهم ومعاملاته وعقائدهم بقلوبهم، وما أشاروا إليه من مواجيدهم، وكيفية ترقيهم من بدايتهم إلى نهايتهم، لتكون لمريدي هذه الطريقة قوّة".
