"بماذا يفتخر الإنسان علينا؟ كيف يمكن له أن يعاملنا بهذه الطريقة الوحشيّة؟ ولم نفعل شيئاً يضرُّه!" بهذه الاستغاثة رفعت الحيوانات شكوى ضدَّ الإنسان أمام ملك الجان. فبعد أن كانت تعِيشُ في أمان على أرض جزيرةٍ ساحرةٍ تحت حكمٍ عادلٍ، حَطَّت سفينة ركّابٍ قذَفتْها عاصفةٌ هَوْجاءُ إلى ساحلِ الجزيرةِ التي اسْتَعْمروها واستغَلُّوا خيراتِها بما فيها من نباتٍ وحيوان. لا يجد الملكُ الحكيمُ حلاًّ لِفصلِ النِّزاع بينَ الحيواناتِ وبني الإنسانِ إلا بِعَقْدِ محكمةٍ برئاستهِ، للاستماع فيها إلى ادّعاءاتِ كلٍّ مِنَ الطرفينِ وأدلّتهم وبراهينهم. كيف سيدافع كل طرف عن موقفه؟ وبمَ سيحكم الملك الحكيم؟
