كثيرًا ما تم تصوير إسبانيا على أنها لغز أو شيء غامض، وعلى أنها واقع غير مفهوم، وربما متناقض، أو أنه غير متسق على الأقل ومتأزم، وتتنازعه توترات لا يمكن تجاوزها، ومحبط. على هذه الصورة تبدت إسبانيا في عيون الأجانب وكذا في عيون الإسبان أنفسهم، كما نجد أن موضوع "قلق إسبانيا" تحول إلى موضوع يجوب إنتاجنا الأدبي- بمبعد عن إسهامات المؤرخين أو علماء الاجتماع- وكان هذا ابتداء من القرن السادس عشر وحتى يومنا هذا، كما أنه ليس من الصعب أن نجد مؤشرات حول هذا الموضوع خلال العصور الوسطى. وهنا نقول إن بقاء الموضوع بهذا الشكل يوضح وجود طابع جوهري، ألا وهو أنه يبدو أن حالة القلق على الوضع الإسباني قد أصبحت مكونًا أساسيًا ضمن الواقع الإسباني، وهذا خلافًا لما يحدث بالنسبة لشعوب أخرى، التي أحيانًا ما تعبر عن قلقها وكدرها متسائلة عن واقعها الحقيقي.
هل هذا "وضع شاذ"، أو وجع قومي، خلافًا لما عليه الشعوب "صاحبة العافية" في أوربا وقارات أخرى؟ تبدو الإجابة بنعم لتؤكد التأويلات المعتادة وأنها مقبولة على أنها أمر بديهي. غير أنه يأتي على خاطرنا تأمل يقودنا إلى النظر إلى هذا الأمر بشكل مختلف، فالإنسان هو الواقع الوحيد الذي هو عبارة عن تأويل لذاته، وليس الأمر القول بإمكانية وجود نظرية عن الحياة الإنسانية بل إن هذا التأويل غير ممكن، اللهم إلا إذا تعلق الأمر بتأويل هذه الحياة وفهمها على ما هي عليه. غير أن هذه النظرية لا تضاف إلى الحياة، بل هي واحدة من مكوناتها ومقاديرها الجوهرية. نجد إذن أن ذلك لو كان من سمات الحياة الإنسانية الفردية، أي حياة كل واحد منا فإننا نتساءل: ألن يكون ذلك جزءًا من الحياة المشتركة، أي حياة كل مجتمع؟ ألا يمكن أن يكون هذا الإصرار على التأمل من قبل الإسبان حول واقعهم، وهذه الرغبة في إيضاح ماهية إسبانيا وما هي ماهيتها وما هو مصيرها، وهذا الموقف الذي يبدو رغبة ملحة وعقبة في طريق تاريخها العادي هو تلك السمة الإنسانية النوعية لذلك المجتمع الذي نطلق عليه إسبانيا؟
