نبذة النيل والفرات: يعالج هذا الكتاب مرحلتين أساسيتين من مراحل تاريخ العرب الحديث والمعاصر، تغطي الأولى منها الفترة الممتدة من عام 1517 إلى عام 1798، وفي المرحلة التي لم تنل عناية كافية من جانب معظم الباحثين العرب حيث اتسمت بالجمود والركود والتخلف الفكري والخضوع المطلق للسلطة. ثم كان التركيز في هذا الكتاب على بحث أحوال الشرق العربي السياسية والاقتصادية والاجتماعية خلال تلك الفترة داخل إطار النظام العثماني كما يهدف هذا الكتاب إلى بحث مظاهر الضعف في الإدارة العثمانية وعلاقة ذلك بالانهيار الاقتصادي والفوضى السياسية التي حلت بالولايات العربية خلال نفس الفترة. أما المرحلة الثاني فتتعلق بتاريخ الشرق العربي منذ بداية القرن التاسع عشر حتى نهاية الحرب العالمية الأولى، ولا تقتصر الموضوعات التي تضمنتها هذه المرحلة على ألأحداث الداخلية فحسب، بل تتعداها إلى تتبع ملامح التجديد والتغيير في الفكر والمجتمع انعكاساً للتأثير بالغرب والاقتباس منه بعد عزلة عاشها الشرق العربي خلال القرون الثلاثة الماضية، كما يتعرض الكتاب كذلك لمناقشة الآثار السياسية التي ترتبت على انفتاح الشرق على العرب، وبذلك استأثرت سياسية بريطانيا تجاه الدولة العثمانية والشرق العربي بالنصيب الأكبر منه.
