تعود نسبة مطير في الجملة إلى قبيلة غطفان بن سعد بن قيس عيلان بن معد بن عدنان، فهي قبيلة عدنانية أولاً حضرية ثانياً قيسية ثالثاً، ومن أشهر فروع مطير بني عبد الله والذين ينتسبون إلى الفرع الغطفاني بنو عبد الله بن غطفان. وعن هذه القبيلة يقول العلامة "إبراهيم فصيح الحيدري البغدادي" في كتابه (عنوا) المجد في بيان أحوال بغداد والبصرة ونجد: "... من أعظم عشائر نجد مطير، وهي عشيرة كبيرة، كثيرة العدد، في غاية القوة والشجاعة، وعدد قبائلها كثير منها: قبيلة الدويش، والمرهمة، وجيلان ذوي عون، والملاعية، ومسيلم، وبرية، والهوامل، فهؤلاء كبار قبائل مطير والمشهور فيما بينهم أنهم من قطحان". وإذا ما عدنا لمتن الكتاب الذي بين يدينا لوجدنا أنه يؤرخ لهذه القبيلة العربية، فيتحدث عن تاريخها ويذكر أنسابها وفروعها التي تفرعت عنها وأسرها المتحضرة، ومن ثم يعرج على شعرائها الذين نافحوا عنها واشترك بعضهم بحروبها وأبدوا بطولات يفتخر بها، وفي فصل مستقل ذكر الكتاب لقب هذه القبيلة التي عرفت به بين القبائل العربية (حمران النواظر) وهو لقب يدل على شجاعة أبنائها وبطولتهم وردّ كيد أعدائها بإيمانهم أن لا هواده في الحرب، ولا هدنة إلا بعد النصر، وقصد أن يكون الشعر الذي أوسده شعراً تاريخياً يؤرخ للقبيلة وبصف انتصاراتها وبطولة رجالها، فسار هذا الشعر جنباً إلى جنب مع التاريخ ومع الأدوات الصانعة للتاريخ، وسبق في بعض الأحيان ذكر معارك لم يذكرها المؤرخون، وغابت عن ذاكرة الناس فأكدها الشاعر في قصيدة، فعادت إلى الأذهان صورة رائعة... هذا ولم يقف الكتاب عند هذا الحد وإنما عرج علة مفخرتين للعربي في صحرائه وهما الخيل والإبل...فكتب فصلين كاملين عن اهتمام قبيلة مطير بالخل، والإبل ذكر فيهما أسماء الخيول الأصيلة التي تملكها القبيلة والإبل ذات النسب العريق التي تفتخر القبيلة بملكها لها وذكر ألوان هذه الخيول وتلك الإبل وميزاتها واهتمام القبيلة لها.
