نبذة النيل والفرات: هذا الكتاب هو محاولة لتصوير العالم حسبما يُرى من موقع الحكم في دمشق انه ليس سيرة الرئيس حافظ الأسد الرسمية، إلا انه ما كان لينجز لو لم يوافق الرئيس على التحدث إلى "باتريك سيل"، يقول المؤلف إن الأسد ورث (أو ربما طور نفسه) المؤهلات الضرورية للمعركة في بيئة تعتبر قاسية حسب أي مقياس، كان متشرباً بالعزة القومية ومغمساً بالدبلوماسية وهو في ذلك كأنه "ديغول" عربي، ورغم أنه يرفض أن يفتئت عليه أحد فإنه يظل حريصاً على ألا تقف بينه وبين أي خصم قطيعة بلا عودة، بل هو يبقي الاحتمال مفتوحاً دائماً لمصالحة في خاتمة المطاف، ولقد أضاف إلى صبره وحذره مقداراً كبيراً من الشجاعة فوصول واحد من الأقليات إلى رئاسة الجمهورية يتطلب شجاعة، والهجوم على إسرائيل في عام 1973 يتطلب شجاعة والوقوف في وجه إسرائيل والصراع مع القوى الأجنبية الأخرى كانت هي إحدى القضايا التي كرس لها حياته ووقته، وكذلك التدخل في لبنان والوقوف ضد محاربة إيران في عام 1976، فيما كان يبدو خروجاً على التضامن العربي، ثم رفض الأمر الواقع الذي حاولت إسرائيل وأميركا بسطه على لبنان في عامي 1982 و 1983, وكذلك مقاومة التسويات الجزئية مع إسرائيل طيلة أعوام كثيرة … كل ذلك يتطلب قرارات خطرة وغير شعبية في معظم الأحيان. هذه المواضيع يطرحها المؤلف في هذا الكتاب الذي يسرد تفاصيل هامة ويدون لعلامات فارقة في حياة الرئيس الأسد ومسيرته في النضال القومي، لبناء مجتمع قوي وأمة عربية خالدة ذات رسالة خالدة.
