إن الغرض الأساسي من هذا المرجع هو تزويد القارئ المتخصص مثل المهندس المساحي، المهندس المدني، المهندس التعديني، الجيولوجي، والجغرافي بالمعلومات الأساسية عن علم إسقاط الخرائط وطرق معالجة المساقط المختلفة والمستخدمة في تمثيل سطح الأرض كلياً أو جزئياً على خريطة. ويعرف المسقط بأنه المستوي (الخريطة) الذي تمثل عليه دوائر الطول والعرض بنظام معين وبمقياس رسم محدد سواء لجزء من الأرض أو كل سطح الأرض. ويستعرض المرجع استخدامات علم إسقاط الخرائط في مجالات العلوم الهندسية والمساحة والعلوم البحرية والطيران والملاحة حيث تشكل الخرائط الملاحية التطبيق الواضح له. بالإضافة إلى علم الجيولوجيا، وعلوم الأرض بصفة عامة، تعتمد في خرائطها على تطبيق نظريات إسقاط الخرائط. ويستخدم كثيراً في الخرائط الجغرافية ومعظم تطبيقات علم الجغرافيا حيث تشكل الخريطة جزء أساسي لهذا العلم. وقد إزداد استخدام هذا العلم، في الوقت الحاضر، في البرامج الجاهزة (Software) للنظام العالمي لتثبيت الموقع (GPS) ولنظم المعلومات الجغرافية (GIS).
