كان وجهها كالثلج، تستلقي بجسدها الخشبي على أريكة جدي، وأربعة من النساء يغسلونها بماء الورد. ويمشطن خصلات شعرها في دلال. ليلى الجميلة، طفولتي التي أعرفها، غنوة الجرف والناي، صوت الليل في صدري، امرأة تحشي فمها بمنديل أبيض، ويحزمونها من وسطها، ومن رجليها، ومن صدرها، كلما نظرت إليها اختنقت. التراب يتسرب إلى أنفي وفمي، أسعل، أبكي وأنا أحمل نعشها، والرجال من خلفي يحملون شعلات النار، والنساء تشق صدورهن ليخجل ملاك الموت. وصلنا إلى نخلة الصلاة، أمسكت فأسًا وضربت الأرض ثلاثًا، ووضعت ليلى أمامي، أقمت صلاة الجنازة. لم أرفع رأسي عندما ظهر الثعبان في التكبيرة الثالثة، ونزل بها أسفل الأرض، احتضن ليلى الجميلة وأكل لحمها، سمعت صرختها قبل أن تغيب للأبد. لم يخرج الثعبان بعدها، كلما جاع ألقينا في بطن الأرض ميتًا جديدًا. صرنا ننجب الأطفال من أجل ذلك.
