عندما وقعت ألمانيا على شروط الاستسلام في نوفمبر 1918، كان هتلر يعالج في المستشفى وقتها جراء إصابته بالغازات السامة، ويومها ثار ساخطا على اعتراف ألمانيا بالهزيمة، وما سيترتب على ذلك من آثار سيئة. ولم يمض وقت طويل حتى تولى هتلر حزب العمال الاشتراكي، مستغلا موهبته الخطابية في اجتذاب الجماهير والتسلل في أعماقها، بمهاجمته المستمرة على معاهدة فرساي التي قلمت أظافر ألمانيا والتي قال عنها الجنرال فوش: إن هذا ليس سلاما.. بل هدنة لمدة عشرين عام. وهذا ما هدث بالفعل.. فسرعان ما تولى هتلر زعامة كامل ألمانيا. وبدأ يعمل على محو آثار معاهدة فرساي بضم الأراضي الأوروبية الناطقة بالألمانية، وكذلك خلق نفوذ سياسي اقتصادي مرموق لألمانيا. رفع هتلر شعار(ألمانيا فوق الجميع)، واجتاح البلاد المجاورة متجاهلا انجلترا وفرنسا، لكن هذا الاغترار الكبير بالقوة العسكرية شجع الفوهرر على غزو روسيا بعدما احتل النمسا وهولندا وبولندا وبلجيكا وفرنسا. بيد أن الصقيع الروسي أنهك قوات هتلر، واستطالت خطوط الامداد، اضافة الى التحالف الدولي ضده، مما دفع جيوشه الى التقهقر فالاستسلام. وانتحر الزعيم الالنازي قهرا ويأسا.. بعدما راح ضحية الحرب عشرات الملايين من القتلى.. وأصيبت أوروبا بالتصدع والدمار.
