"طيور الشوك" رواية ملحمية تحكي قصة عائلة كليري لزمن يمتد على أكثر من نصف قرن من عام 1915 وحتى عام 1969 وإطارها قارة استراليا بكاملها. هي قصة كتبت بإحساس عميق، يجسد قيمة التضحية، من خلال صداقة جمعت بين طائر وإنسان، إنها قصة طائر يغرد مرة واحدة فقط في حياته ليلفظ أثنائها أنفاسه الأخيرة بعدما تغرزه شوكة من عشه. كل شخصية في هذه الرواية هي طائر شوك غرد مرة واحدة في حياته، لكن أهم شخصيات القصة هما الكاهن والبطلة، فقد كان تغريدهما أجمل تغريد. أحبا بعضهما البعض لكن نداء الله بالنسبة للكاهن كان أقوى من نداء الحب، فما كان من حبيبته إلا أن تزوجت زيجة محكوم عليها بالفشل من أولها، وفي المرة الوحيدة التي ألتقيا بها كأحباء أنجبت طفلاً كان أهم ما وهبته الحياة لها، لكنه كان مثل والده، ناداه الله فلبى النداء ثم مات في حادث... وهنا فقط تخبر الكاهن أنه كان والد الطفل فيموت أيضاً...
"إنه طائر الشوك، والشوكة في صدره، يتبع قانوناً ثابتاً لا يدري أنه وبهذا القانون "يخوزق نفسه" ويموت مفرداً. وفي لحظة دخول الشوكة لا يدري أن الموت آت، بل، وبكل بساطة يغني ويظل يغني حين تنقطع آخر نغمة. لكننا، ونحن نضع الأشواك في صدورنا نعرف، نفهم، ومع ذلك نصرَ على زرعها، وسنظل نكررها إلى ما شاء الله".
