إن الجدال حول قِدَم العالم، جدال امتدّ طويلاً بين الفلسفة والدين، وشهد الكثير من محاولات التوفيق بينهما. وقد تأثّر هذا الجدال بالفلسفة اليونانية وخاصة بأرسطو الذي يرى أن العالم مادة وزمان وحركة وكلها أزلية. ومن أشهر ما عُرف حول هذا الموضوع كان الخلاف بين أبو حامد الغزالي وأبو الوليد ابن رشد. فقد رفض الغزالي نظرية أرسطو، ولو اقتصر موقف الغزالي على رفض فكر أرسطو لكان الأمر هينًا، لكنه أفتى بتكفير كل من يأخذ بفكره. وهذه المسألة تقود إلى نتيجة غاية في الخطورة وهي أن الكافر يُقتل في العرف الإسلامي، والغزالي ـ حجة الإسلام ـ قد كفَّر أرسطو، وبالتالي فإنه أحلَّ قتله، أي قتل فلسفته وهو الأمر الذي دفع بابن رشد إلى الذوْد عنه وعن فلسفته بالاستناد إلى محاججة برهانية ـ شرعية. ونظرًا لكثرة الخلاف والجدال القائمين على طبيعة شخصية الغزالي المتَّسمة بالازدواج والتناقض، انسحب ذلك الخلاف على حقيقة موقفه من أرسطو. أما الفيلسوف ابن رشد فسنجده مدافعًا في كل كتبه عن الفلسفة ورجالها، جاعلًا إياها واجبة شرعًا على كل مسلم ومسلمة، واستنكر على الغزالي إقدامه على تكفير الفلاسفة في مسألة لم ينص عليها الشرع صراحة أو ينعقد عليها إجماع المسلمين، بل هي من المسائل التي تمتُّ إلى التأويل، والوقوف على حقيقة الأمر فيها مقتصر على أهل البرهان.
