يحاول هذا الكتاب رسم خريطة للفاعلين الاجتماعيين في سياق ثورة يناير، وتحليل الأزمة الناتجة عن تصدع مجمل العلاقات الاجتماعية، وتجمع تناقضاتها وتكثقها حول مركز السلطة السياسية في المجتمع، ما طبيعة هؤلاء الفاعلين؟ بصرف النظر عن نوع التغيير الذي استهدفوه، وسواء اتخذوا شكلا منظما متعارفا عليه، أم تشكلوا في شبكات فضفاضة من أفراد ومنظمات.
يتناول الكتاب الجماعات التي دخلت المجال العام من باب السعي للهيمنة السياسية والأيديولوجية. أولا الرأسمالية الكبيرة، التي نحتت لنفسها قدرا من الاستقلال عن جهاز الدولة والتحالف الحاكم طوال العقدين الأخيرين للقرن الماضي، وطرحت مع بداية الألفية مشروعا متميزا للهيمنة عبر التحالف مع جماعة ضيقة داخل الحزب الوطني الحاكم والجهاز البيروقراطي، وهو المعروف بمشروع التوريث، أو نقل السلطة من مبارك الأب لجمال مبارك. ثانيا الإسلاميين، وجماعة الإخوان المسلمين على وجه الخصوص، بوصفهم المشروع السياسي المنافس الأبرز الذي اختمر بدوره خلال نفس العقدين الأخيرين من القرن الماضي قبل أن ينتهي نهايته الدرامية المعروفة. ثم الحركات الداعية للإصلاح الديمقراطي التي كانت الحاضن للتيار السياسي العريض الذي ضم جماعات يسارية وليبرالية وقومية، وأخيرا يقدم قراءة عامة وملاحظات نقدية حول العملية برمتها.
