الحكي مهنةٌ قديمةٌ، وهذه الحكايات هي من بين أقدم ممتلكاتنا. فطوال سنواتٍ طويلةٍ قبل مجيء البِيض إلى وطننا، كانت هذه الأساطير تُروى وتُروى، وتنتقل من جيل إلى جيل. كانت تمثّل كتبنا، وأدبنا، وكانت ذكرياتُ الحكّائين الأوراقَ التي دُوّنت عليها هذه الحكايات.كان الحكي، وما يزال اليوم، وسيلةً لتزجية الوقت، ولكنّ القيمة الحقيقيّة للحكايات القبَليّة تكمن في حقيقة أنّها مرتبطةٌ ارتباطًا وثيقًا بحيوات ناسها. وكما هي الحال مع التاريخ ومع الأدب، باتت هذه الحكايات أعرافًا متوارثة، وقد اتّسمت باتّساعٍ يماثل اتّساع تجارب الشّعب. فيها ومن خلالها عاش شجعاننا وأبطالنا. ووجدنا فيها الدّروس والمغازي الأخلاقيّة التي تُرشد أيّامنا. وهناك، أيضًا، حكايات خرافيّة رائعةٌ في فانتازيا خيالها الجامح.ولكنّ أساطيرنا ترحل كما يرحل عجائزنا، وشبابنا لا يتعلّمونها – وهذا يشكِّل جانبًا من جوانب دمارنا. هذا محزن، على الأخص لأنّ عموم النّاس باتوا يدركون بقدرٍ ما أهميّة هذه الحكايات. وبذا، ومن خلال تدوين حكايات قبيلتها، تُؤدّي هوميشوما واجبًا لأسلافها، وتُؤدّي في الوقت ذاته خدمةً للأخلاف. هذه الحكايات قيّمة. وستُواصل اكتساب أهميّة أكبر فأكبر مع مرور السنوات، إذ إنّ روح الهنود ستحيا وتتنفّس من خلال نُثار الأغاني والقصص المدوَّنة، ومع أنّ شخصيّة الهنديّ الأميركيّ ستترجّل إلى الأبد من خشبة الحياة، إلا أنّ الرّوح خالدة.
