كيف يصبح الموقف قراراً حاسماً وسهماً سريعاً نحو هدفه؟ إنه ليس سهماً فحسب بل قوة وشجاعة تنبع من نفس أمّارة بالعدل، تحاول أن تخترق طبقات مظلمة وعنيفة من الطبقية والجشع والظلم. يأخذنا الكاتب (هاورد پيل) عبر غابة شيروود، منذ البدايات التي تتكوّن فيها شخصية روبن هود وأعز أصدقائه، في مغامرات مرحة، وحيوية، تجعلنا كباراً وصغاراً نسكن في تلك الغابة الخضراء معه، ونتجوّل في دروبها الغامضة، ونشترك في كل شيء معه وصولاً إلى النهاية. إنها إرادة الطريق الجريء الذي يختاره المرء لنفسه، والوقوف مع الحق بقلب شجاع وروح مؤمنة وسهام لا تخطئ هدفها!إنه بطل نصف حقيقي/نصف أسطوري، اختلفت الأبحاث التأريخية في تحديد حقيقته وعصره، ولكن دقة تسديد سهامه، ومواقفَه في العدالة والإيثار والتضحية، صارت رمزاً للروح الحرّة الأبية الشجاعة. تدور أحداث الرواية في وقت مبكر من القرون الوسطى، وفي ظرف تاريخي يشير إلى ريتشارد قلب الأسد، والحملات الصليبية على أراضي المسلمين في فلسطين والشرق.ويمكن للقارئ أن يجد عدداً متنوعاً من القصص التي تسرد أحداث مغامرات روبن هود، وفيها نقص وزيادات مختلفة، لكن المؤلف والرسّام الأمريكي (هاورد پايل) (1853- 1911)، حاول أن يقدّم نسخة شاملة، فيها أشهر الأحداث ذات الصلة، وعزّزها بالرسوم، وجعل الرواية موجّهة للفتيان (Juvenile fiction)، بل هي للكبار وكل الأعمار من دون شك. ومن نافلة القول إن قصة روبن هود قد أخذت مدى عالمياً واسعاً وما تزال، في السينما وأفلام الرسوم المتحركة والمجلات المصوّرة.
