عندما فارقنا;أمل دنقل; فى الحادى والعشرين من مايو 1983 أصابتنى إثــر فقده صدمة هائلة أخرستنى عن الكلام أو الكتابة عنه. فلم أستطع أن أكتب أو حتى أن أرتجل شيئًا عنه لخمسة أعوام على الأقل؛ فقد كانت الصدمة قاسية، وكان ألم الفقد موجعًا، وكنت أشعر بغياب نصفى عن نصفى أو بغياب عقلى عن جسدى، فقد كان;أمل; هو المرآة التى أتوجه إليها كى أقف مجردًا من كل شىء إلا الشعور بالآمال، وأنا فى حضرة أخ لم يجد علىّ الزمان بمثله، ولا أزال أفتقده إلى اليوم، ولذلك كانت وطأة الفقد قاسية وهى التى عاقتنى بقدر ما أخرستنى عن الكتابة عنه أو الكلام فى رثائه؛ فمر التأبين الذى أقامه;التجمع;، وأنا مكتفٍ بالجلوس منصتًا لكلمات المشاركين، وكانت أبلغ الكلمات وأشدها إثارة للشجون كلمة المرحوم يوسف إدريس الذى كان يُكِنُّ لأمل دنقل محبة خالصة ووفاء صادقًا. وتوالت الأعوام، وشيئًا فشيئًا خفَّت آلام الجرح ولم تَعُدْ بالقسوة التى كانت عليها، وبدأ الزمن فى معالجة الجراح القاتلة، ولكنى لم أستطع أن أمسك بالقلم لأكتب أول مقال عن أمل إلا بعد موته بخمس سنوات حين عاودتني ذكراه التى فاجأتنى بها النتيجة الموضوعة على مكتبى، فكتبت على إثرها مقالا عن ذكرى أمل دنقل فى جريدة;الحياة; التى كنت أكتب فيها مقالاتى لسنوات عديدة. ومنذ ذلك الوقت انكسر حائط الصمت، وصرت أكتب عن أمل وأتحدث عنه بلا جراح موجعة تعيق الكتابة. ولكنى كنت قد عاهدت نفسى بما هو أكثر من الكتابة عنه فى مقالات أو الاشتراك فى أحاديث أو ندوات؛ فقد قررت أن أكتب عنه كتابًا كاملًا يُنصِف شعره، ويركز على القضية الأساسية لهذا الشاعر. وصار هذا القرار قرارا بينى وبين نفسى كنوع من الوعى المضمر الذى ظللت أنطوى عليه لسنوات طوال، ولم أنس خلال هذه السنوات ذكرى أمل دنقل .
